Top 5 Movies Based on Comics

Comic book movies have come a long way in popular cinema. They were once held mostly to Television series and specials in the likes of Spider-Man, Captain America, Batman, and others. The early comic book movies were cheesy and low budget affairs like Corman’s Fantastic Four, The Phantom, and the first Punisher with Dolf Lundgren.

Now, comic book movies are huge business. Marvel comics has raised almost a billion dollars to produce their own films, and Superman and Batman have seen huge resurgences on the silver screen. These movies are now worldwide phenomena and let’s see what the best comic book films are.

5. X-Men

If Spider-Man is King of the Mountain, then X-Men helped it get there. The X-Men was one of the first “big budget” super hero movies in recent years, and it didn’t disappoint. X-Men was widely successful and spawned sequels with four movies out so far. This movie had a large list of A-list actors including Halle Berry, Ian McKellen and the fan favorite to play Professor Xavier – Patrick Stewart. The success of the film helped pave the way for other films to become what they are today.

4. Spider-Man

Spider-Man was the movie that rocketed the superhero genre to become cemented as a mainstay in our culture. It broke records, made hundreds of millions, and made superstars out of Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. Spider-Man is a top super hero movie in regards to popularity, money made, and impact on the future of comic book movies.

3. IronMan

Iron Man really set the bar high for upcoming comic book movies. It was true to the source material, had high quality effects, and told a great story to boot. John Favreau did such a great job making Iron Man a hit, and even called in many of the Marvel writers to go over the script to make it the best what it could be. This movie gave a rebirth to Robert Downey Jr.’s career and took the Iron Man character to new heights. It is the kind of film that future comic books will be compared to for quite some time to come.

2. 300

300 took a comic book and transformed it into a big screen super smash runaway hit. The movie made its budget back in the opening weekend and has fueled what will soon be many spin offs similar in style and looks. 300 had so many sequences and images that were straight from the film, but also worked to develop characters and subplots, making the story its own. This film is both loved and hated by critics and has also sparked international debate. All of this from just 300 men of Sparta. This movie quickly became a classic comic book film.

1. Betman: The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight blew off the doors of what a comic book movie could be. This movie destroyed box office records, making it the number two movie in the United States of all time and number four worldwide. Holy Greenbacks Batman! Combine this with electrifying performances all around and an Oscar for the late Heath Ledger and this movie has shattered all expectations and catapulted The Dark Knight to the number one spot in my list.

The Best Movies I’ve Seen

These are the best movies I’ve seen:

•    2001: A Space Odyssey,
•    Koyaanisqatsi,
•    The Third Man,
•    Casablanca,
•   Fog of War,
•    La Strada,
•    The Draughtsman’s Contract,
•    City Lights, and
•    Blade Runner

2001: A Space Odyssey

I first saw 2001 when I was 15. I went to see it for the special effects, but after seeing it, I knew that I had missed something important. I went back to see it again, maybe 20 times, read the book 3 or 4 times, and even wrote a high school essay on it. I eventually decided that I understood it. Years later, I saw more in it that I didn’t see earlier, so now I am not so sure that I really understand it. It changed my whole view of the world. It made me want to be a movie maker.

Koyaanisqatsi

I first saw Koyaanisqatsi when my brother showed me a videotape he had rented. It wasn’t until many years later that I saw it in a theatre. I saw it three times on the big screen, once at a live performance of the score by Philip Glass. The movie seemed to me to be completely abstract, yet it held my fascination every time I watch it. It does have a “story” and a “message”, but I’m not sure you can really put them into words.

The Third Man and Casablanca

I find that both of these movies have somewhat sad endings, in that the protagonists don’t get what they really wanted. Even so, they survive and maybe grow as people. I just wrote a blog where I talked about my fascination with this kind of plot. http://dynamiclethargyfilms.ca/blog/?p=170

I’d heard of both of these movies many years before I watched either of them. I never saw either on the big screen. I find both movies affect strongly at an emotional level.

I noticed that Roger Ebert has an image from The Third Man on his Twitter page. He also uses the Third Man Theme for his TV show.

Fog of War

Fog of War is an extended interview with Robert S. McNamara, who was the US Secretary of Defence during the Vietnam War. Sometimes it could be a horror movie, and other times a philosophical discussion. I never saw it on the big screen.

La Strada

Federico Fellini’ La Strata is the only movie of his that I really like. I saw it first in a movie appreciation course. It is about a brute of a man and the woman that travels with him. The end is both sad and surprising. This is another movie that I never saw on the big screen.

The Draughtsman’s Contract

I wanted to see this after seeing the review on Siskel and Ebert, but I didn’t see it for many years after. The first time I saw it was in a theatre. The woman I took to see it did not like it, and she asked me to apologize to her for taking her. I’ve seen it several times since and it grew on me. It is a sort of mystery, but one that isn’t really solved. I think it is that uncertainty that draws me to the movie. The director has crammed this movie full of many little details. I am sure there is still much more to see in this movie than I have so far.

City Lights

I saw this the first time in the mid 1970s when they rereleased several of Charlie Chaplin’s movies. It didn’t stick in my mind at the time, but years later I watched a documentary about Chaplin which showed out cuts from the movie. I think nearly an hour was devoted to City Lights. It was after that experience that the movie began to touch me emotionally. The last scene means so much more once you understand how the characters reached that point.

Blade Runner

I didn’t appreciate this movie until I began to talk to other people about it. Blade Runner asks what does it mean to be human. The movie uses hints at the nature of the hero to ask this question. These hints have fuelled many a long discussion. It is something of an intellectual and philosophical puzzle to be solved.

Reflecting on these thoughts, I see that most of these movies appeal to my intellect. They ask questions that get me thinking.

My Personal List of Favourite Movies

Different people will evaluate differently a good movie. Some prefer a film with breathtaking photography; others are thrilled with outstanding special effects. I have a penchant for musicals, dramas and great stories, especially well-written, intriguing romances. I also love to watch a great actor’s performance. Al Pacino, Daniel Day-Lewis, Sean Penn, Colin Firth, Bette Davis, Helen Mirren, are among my favourite actors. Considering all this, I award five stars to a movie which moves me, which completely engrosses me. Here is the list of my all-time favourites.

1. Romeo and Juliette
Fellini’s Romeo and Juliette is my favourite romantic movie. Following the dissection of Shakespeare’s classic in class, I first screened the movie in the school’s auditorium. After seeing the film half a dozen times since then, I still marvel at how the screenplay is remarkably faithful to the book. Verona could not have been better illustrated. I enjoyed everything: the costumes, the music and the intense performances of the actors. Is there a girl who did not dream about Romeo after seeing the movie? And who can forget Michael York’s performance?

2. Sense and Sensibility
This movie, starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet is a real jewel. Jane Austin’s most romantic classic was magnificently adapted to the screen. Kate Winslet, as usual plays with passion and Emma Thompson’s character (Elinor) although subdued, is as intense. It takes a lot of talent to play a role with such nuances. Their unlike personalities make the movie interesting as we watch their different reactions at not having the men they yearn for. I especially enjoyed the plot leading to the climax where Elinor (Emma Thompson) finds out that Edward, the character played by Hugh Grant is not married. What a wonderful happy ending! I also enjoyed the scenes with Margaret, the youngest daughter. She added a touch a humor, freshness and lightness to the story.

3. The Way We Were
I was twelve years old when I first viewed this movie. I still see myself in the theater, admiring Barbara Streisand and dreaming about being in Robert Redford’s arms! This movie had all the ingredients for a great hit: beautiful songs, a wonderful love story and two talented actors.

4. Love Story
A poignant love story whose ending left almost everybody tearful. Apparently, even members of the royalty shed tears. Erich Segal’s book which doesn’t total more than 131 pages had also been a huge hit before it became a big-screen movie. When we think of it, there is nothing original about this story. People fall in love every day. Poor girl meet rich boy is also not a novelty subject. And death has separated young couples madly in love from the beginning of times. To me, what made this story unique was the humor, the tenderness and the dialogues. “Love means not ever having to say you’re sorry”, became a classical line. The scene when Jenny dies in Oliver’s arms could not have been more romantic and heart-breaking.

5. Witness
What a wonderful idea for a story! It is a different kind of police story which also makes us learn more about these fascinating persons, the Amish. However, what intrigued me the most in this movie is the romantic story. I love the way the desire was built between the main characters. I think many women were desiring John Book (Harrison Ford) as much as Rachel (Kelly McGillis)! They should make more movies like this one because it cannot be classified into one specific category. Those who enjoy suspense, action, police or love stories are well served with this film.

6. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Yes, Harrison Ford again! He may not be the greatest actor, but this former Hollywood carpenter certainly knows how to pick great roles! This is my favorite action movie. There is not a boring moment in the film. When I first view the movie at a theater, I was so much taken in by the adventures and surprised by the denouements, that I constantly kicked my friend!

7. The Godfather I
There are different reasons why I appreciate this masterpiece. First of all, the actors’ performances. Who can forget the performance of Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, etc? How about the rest of the cast? Their portrayals were impressive.Italian traditions are very well depicted. The wedding is my favourite scene. I loved the music, mainly the part when the Godfather dances with his daughter (Talia Shire). I also appreciated the scene when Michael (Al Pacino) confesses to his fiancée (Diane Keaton) that his family belongs to the Mafia. The way she stared at him for long minutes is memorable.

8. The Ten Commandments
A great biblical story told magnificently. The costumes, the settings were impeccable. As my brother once said, this movie is like bible study. It is incredible how much we learn about the Old Testament in this masterpiece. The parting of the Red Sea, the death of all the Egyptian soldiers, etc; the episodes are extraordinarily illustrated. Charlton Heston, John Derek and Yul Brymmer’s performance were great, but my favorite interpretation was the one offered by Anne Baxter. She was suave, forceful and convincing. In my opinion, she was an excellent actress who should have been seen much more often on the big screen after this epic.

9. Oliver Twist
This is another classic I first discovered in high school. Oliver Twist is, of course, the story of a young orphan’s experiences on the mean streets of 19th century London. I still have immense pleasure in watching it. The music, the songs and dances are entertaining. What a wonderful adaptation of Charles Dicken’s classic! We really feel the atmosphere of Victoria-era London. The cast of boys is well directed as well as the wonderful interpretation of Alex Guinness as master-thief Fagin. A movie I love to watch on a cold or rainy Saturday night!

10. A Room With A View
This is a story about a quiet passion in Victorian-era England. A young girl from a good family is kissed without her permission during a trip to Florence, Italy. She then resolves to marry someone else (Daniel Day-Lewis). I love this movie because of the story, the photography and the performance of the cast. Helena Bonham Carter excels in epoch movies. It also makes us ponder on our feelings, sincerity and integrity.

11.The Bear

I could not complete this list without mentioning The Bear, by French cineaste Jean-Jacques Arnaud. This is the heart-warming story of an adult male bear who tries to avoid hunters, while protecting an orphan bear cub that follows him. The passage where the bear confronts the tracker remains one of my preferred scenes in movies.

An Overview Of Bollywood Movies ? Exciting Information About Bollywood That You Did Not Know

It may interest you to know that Bollywood is name that refers to film industry in India. This is the industry where all kinds of Bollywood movies are released every year, ranging across a myriad genre of cinema. Bollywood is based in India, Mumbai and Maharashtra. More often than not, people use the term to refer collectively to Indian Cinema though in the real sense, it is just a part of the Indian cinema industry. Bollywood is notably the largest producer of films in India and among the world largest film production centers in the world.

These days, bollywood movies have started featuring the use of English in their dialogues which has helped in roping in more viewers. Another distinct quality of films that are made in Bollywood is the generous use of song and dance to take the story forward. To keep fans hooked, producers usually market and release the music albums of their movies a month or two in advance. The overall benefit runs across all kinds of movies and helps them take a sizable percentage of the movie industry which foreign films also hold.

What decides whether a movie a good? The trivial fact when watching a movie in a theater is that it should give you back your money’s worth. Taking into view the fact that bollywood movies feature a lot of sizzling entertainment, that is not an issue. You are sure to get a value for your money. However, a lot of times these movies do not make sense as they are ‘comedy’ or ‘action’ or ‘romantic’ in nature and are usually take offs of popular English movies.

As is common with all movies, most Hindi films are based around a distinct story and some of them can be quite dramatic.                                                                                     The methodology of creating a movie in bollywood is perhaps what makes this industry different from other film industries. First the director and the writer sit down and decide on the storyline and the script. In most cases, this is taken off, or ‘inspired’ from popular movies in the West or in the East. Then these characters and stories are translated to relate to the Indian life and a lot of song and dance is added to make the movie ‘entertaining’.

However, this is not true of all movies that are made. There are plenty of filmmakers in bollywood who like going on the path untrodden by others. Such movies are often labeled as ‘parallel cinema’ and have often have a cult following. Farhan Akhtar and Anurag Kashyap are two people who are known for their off beat yet highly successful films. However, there are large numbers of English speaking Indians in bollywood so keeping away the western influence of films can get a little difficult.

Another view which a lot of film enthusiasts hold against the Hollywood influence is that these movies often show the western style of living in a positive light and the Indian style quite negatively. This adversely affects youngsters to adopt western ways of thinking and makes them forget about their own culture.

The Right Movies For Children

The television is invaded with programs which you wouldn’t recommend to children, but the big screens don’t have many offers regarding the right movies for children. However, the TV can become a way of learning, when you choose the right content.

If you want to keep your child away from the TV, the chances for this thing to happen are pretty low. Instead of forbidding him to absolutely not touching the remote or DVD’s, the best would be to select for him the content in such a way that he would learn useful things on the go.

Here are some ways through which you can select theright movies for children.

Search for more information regarding the movies for your child.

There is no special category for the movies right for children, because there are movies which can be watched by children, as well as by adults. You know you can always count on Disney’s movies, which are pretty “cleaned” regarding the subjects harmful to children, but what about the other movies?

Before buying a DVD or going to cinema together with your child, read more about the subject of the movie, the genre, if it’s not recommended to children, the cast etc.

Try to see how well is ranked on the sites about movies and watch the trailer of the movie. The movie reviews and the comments of the persons who have already seen (which you can also see on the sites about movies) will help you understand better what is all about and if it’s indeed a movie from which your child could learn from.

Also enter on the official site of the movie; you will find there all the information about it and if the movie is good for children or not.

It is sufficient to notice who are the actors which play in the movie, because usually, these are grouped in a certain category, especially regarding the movies for children.

Ask other parents and find out from them what movies they consider suitable for children, if they recommend you a certain movie, why, if they watched a movie which they you would like your child to see, what is their opinion about it etc.

If nothing convinces you, then watch the movie, in order to be absolutely sure that it is a movie for children.

Flap Movies Worth Watching

I have read a lot of reviews about movies so called flap. These movies include those that receive negative reviews and those that have low income returns. Based from the negative things I have heard about them, I become more interested in finding out what really made them win those bad criticisms. Here are the flap movies I have watched:

Sahara

This movie is considered as one of the biggest financial failures in the history of Hollywood movies. Its box-office sales actually reached more than 0 million, which is actually the most intriguing part of it being a flap. Well, let’s say this amount is great but the expense of this entire movie is far greater than this. Knowing Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz to star this movie, it was actually a worth watching movie.

Motherhood

This is a 2009 movie starred by one of my favorite artists Uma Thurman. Though she won Best Actress Award at the Boston Film Festival for her performance, this movie was considered as the second worst flop movies in British cinematic history. Well, who would not think of it that way when their gross sale on its opening night is only £9.

All About Steve

A classic American comedy movie starred by an A-lister Sandra Bullock, I thought it would be speared from being called one of the worst movies. But yes, many critics considered it as a “forgettable” movie. Not only that, it received nominations such as Worst Pictures, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Screen Couple. And not to mention Sandra Bullock took home the Worst Actress Award for this movie. Isn’t interesting?

Gigli

Starred by two calibers of Hollywood Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, no way this is a flap movie. But really, yes way. It happened. I did not know exactly why. So, I watched it and I got what critics meant. I was simply bored with it. But of course it is not an objective basis. It’s unfair just to rely on my own perception. Knowing it as the number one in the Bottom Rated Movies of All Time by Yahoo! Movies and winning the grand slam of Razzie Awards, no wonder it is indeed a flap movie. Still, it got my curiosity to watch it.

The Adventure of Pluto Nash

No question Eddie Murphy is a funny guy. But this supposed-to-be a funny movie is not funny at all. It spent a hundred million dollars in production including its insignificant numerous numbers of revisions but then it only grossed 7 million dollars. Very not funny.

Catwoman

Halle Berry as Storm in X-Men is a phenomenon, but Halle Berry as Catwoman is a destruction. I don’t mean that really. But it is certainly one of the worst movies I have watched and in Hollywood as well. Just like Sandra Bullock, she also won the Worst Actress Award for this movie. But unlike Sandra Bullock who accepted the award with elegance and pride, Halle Berry frankly said in an interview “I want to thank Warner Brothers for putting me in a piece of shit, God-awful movie…” Wow, interesting shit to watch then.

Are Movies Getting Less Interesting?

This is a good question which I always thought of. Are Movies Getting Less Interesting?’

I’m afraid I have to agree that movies are getting less interesting. From my point of view, movies were much better in the past.

Yet there have been a mix of good and bad movies. But not always are they fully positive in front of people’s eyes. It can be a bit of the opposite too!

Some of the best movies I have watched before are not always liked by everyone. At least one person hates your movie that you think is best. Even critics give a lot of negative information regarding the movie.

The fact you need to remember is that everyone likes what they want to like. So be it the classic 1950 movies.

I enjoy many film genres such as horror and thriller. But it doesn’t mean everyone will like these genres. My niece always complains to me about watching horror movies because she is too afraid. She hates watching horror movies. But she enjoys High School Musical. In fact, High School Musical is her best movie out of everything. But I hate it because I think its boring. Yet, High School Musical a very popular movie and I was surprised despite that fact that they worked really hard.

So you see? Everyone has a right to choose their type of movie they enjoy.

Even though the technology today is splendid. Many people don’t find enough movies interesting. Yet it is hard to create something totally fresh. Movie watchers don’t want to watch a movie similar to something else.

These days, I have seen that movies are changing. There are several things that movies are including now than they did before. Below are a few things:

Sexual activity

As years have gone by, nudity has increased in many movies. Although, back in he 70′s, there were quite a few movies with nudity. But now, this has increased so much that nearly in all movies that rate above 15 have a fair bit of nudity in them.

Humour

Ok I don’t know if you will agree with me but I believe that humour has changed as well. People think a lot of stuff could be funny. But as years have gone, humour has changed dramatically. Before, a lot of people laughed at things which no one even finds funny today.

Here is an example:

Many centuries ago, people laughed at comments such as this:

My pants ain’t catching any men!

Yes I know your not laughing! You think its not funny? Well it probably was once upon a time!

And now in 2008, people laugh a lot regarding sex. Yes it is true! When I am in college, my friends always make comments about sex. And they all laugh too much. Ok I admit I laugh as well! But you see? Humour has always something new! And continue to change as time progresses.

So I think movies will change too! With all the technology and stuff, they should! But will movies improve? Who knows?
